History

The organization of the anesthesiology and intensive care service in our country dates back to the 60s of the 20th century. It was in 1960 that the first positions of anesthesiologist-intensivist doctors were opened in the Baku Clinical Hospital No. 1, and a few years later the Department of Anesthesiology and İntensive care was created.

Famous national scientists made a great contribution to the organization and rapid development of the anesthesiology and intensive care service: academician M.A. Topchubashov, academician F.A. Efendiev, academician Z.M. Mamedov, academician M.J. Javadzade, academician B.A. Agayev, professor B.M. Makhmudbekov, professor B.H. Abasov and others. At first, various methods of general anesthesia, including endotracheal anesthesia, were used in the clinics headed by these outstanding scientists and surgeons. The emergence and development of the scientific school of anesthesiology and intensive care in Azerbaijan was due to the activities of MD, Professor Abbas Ahmed oglu Akhunbeyli. Being the first doctor of sciences in anesthesiology and rintensive care in our republic, he made an exceptionally important contribution to the development of this science. Thus, in 1970, on the initiative and with the direct participation of A.A. Akhunbeyli, who defended his doctoral dissertation in Moscow, the first research laboratory in the republic was organized at the Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery (now the Scientific Center of Surgery), and several years later (1974) the Department of Anesthesiology and İntensive care was created at the Azerbaijan Medical Institute named after N. Narimanov (now the Azerbaijan Medical University), the head of which was appointed to be A.A.Akhunbeyli. Since this period, the teaching of anesthesiology and intensive care has reached a high level, large-scale research work has been planned and implemented. In other words, there was a leap in the development of this science, as a result of which in the following years, under the leadership of A.A. Akhunbeyli, more than 30 candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended.

In 1976, the First Scientific and Practical Conference on Anesthesiology and Resuscitation was held in the republic and the Republican Scientific and Medical Society of Anesthesiologists and Resuscitators (RSMA) was created. Professor A.A. Akhunbeyli was elected chairman of the society. Currently, the chairman of the society is the head of the resuscitation and intensive care department of the Central Clinical Hospital, the responsible physician of the pain center, PhD in medicine.

Professor A.A. Akhunbeyli worked as the chief specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan from 1966 to 2011 and did a lot of serious work to create a wide network of this service and provide it with highly qualified specialists. If in the mid-60s the number of anesthesiologists-resuscitators in the republic was only 9 people, now this number has exceeded 1200. Professor A.A. Akhunbeyli, being a well-known and authoritative scientist in the former USSR, for many years was a member of the editorial board of the journals "Anesthesiology and Resuscitation" (Moscow), "Resuscitation" (Alma-Ata) and other scientific medical journals.

In the 80s of the last century, at the Institute for Advanced Medical Studies named after A.A. Aliyev created the Department of Anesthesiology and İntensive care, the head of which was appointed Professor S.N. Linev (scientific supervisor - academician M.J. Javadzade). This scientific school also plays an important role in the training of scientists and medical specialists in the field of anesthesiology and intensive care.

Currently, the position of chief specialist in anesthesiology and resuscitation of the Medical Academy of the Republic of Azerbaijan is held by Associate Professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and İntensive care of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine Israil Maharrambayli.

Since 2011, a new stage in the training of medical specialists in anesthesiology and resuscitation has begun in our country, which consists in the introduction of a three-year residency.
